I am currently a member of the ATLAS experiment, concentrating on the operation and the performance of the liquid argon (LAr) calorimeter. The ATLAS LAr calorimeter plays an important (essential ?) role for the triggering, reconstruction and analysis of physics events. The calorimeter serves to identify electrons and photons, reconstruct jets, measure the missing transverse energy, all ingredients which are often the key elements when measuring cross-sections or searching for new physics phenomena.
In 1983, as a PhD student, I joined the UA1 experiment with the LAPP-Annecy group to study ppbar collisions at √s=630 GeV. I studied the background to a possible top signal. In 1985 I became staff member of LAPP with a position as chargé de recherche of CNRS. In 1987, with a CERN fellowship, I joined the OPAL experiment at LEP and worked on the first luminosity measurement. In 1991, I joined the RD3 collaboration to test the first prototypes of the ATLAS LAr calorimeter with accordion geometry. Between 1997 and 2001, I joined the NA48 experiment at CERN with the LAL-Orsay group. NA48 has measured the ratio R(εʼ/ε) and proven the existence of direct CP violation in the Kaon system. Since 2001, I have participated to the tests of ATLAS calorimeter modules in beam tests and then to the detector commissioning and operation with LHC collisions. In the lecture in calorimetry, I shall describe the interaction of high energy particle with matter, the means to collect and measure the deposited energy and a few detector techniques.
